Bringing a dog to the North Coast is straightforward — the coastline is dog-friendly, the beaches welcome them, and the rhythm of a holiday slows down enough that a dog settles into it easily. But there are a few things worth knowing before you arrive.
The beaches
Most of the North Coast beaches allow dogs, though some have seasonal restrictions or specific hours. Christmas Bay and Four Poles are reliably dog-friendly year-round. Sunrise Point works well for dogs — the walk is manageable and the beach is usually quiet. Check locally before arriving, but in general, the North Coast's beach culture is welcoming to dogs in a way that many more built-up stretches of coast are not.
Early morning is the best time — the water is calmer, the beaches are emptier, and your dog won't be navigating crowds. Most dogs that have been on a beach at first light seem to remember it distinctly.
The practical side
Bring more water than you think you'll need. The sun reflects off sand and water, and dogs overheat faster than people do. A collapsible bowl takes no space and solves the problem. Paw balm or booties help if your dog has sensitive pads — the sand heats up quickly by mid-morning.
Find a vet before you need one. Durban's veterinary services are good, but you want the number saved and the location marked before an emergency. Most North Coast towns have a vet within fifteen minutes.
A secure garden or enclosed space at your rental is critical — not just for safety, but because dogs benefit from being able to move around at their own pace. A fenced area means your dog can settle in without constant supervision.
The rhythm
Dogs travel well when the pace is slow. A holiday home suited to a dog is one where there's space to rest, a routine that emerges naturally, and no pressure to be anywhere at any particular time. The best dog holidays are the ones where the dog's schedule becomes the family's schedule, not the other way around.
Most dogs that come to the North Coast for a week seem to understand, by day three, that this is their place for now. They settle into the deck, the garden, the early beach walks. They stop waiting for the car.
